Residential Bear-proof Containers

Bear-proof containers must feature sturdy construction and an animal-proof latching system on the lid and door. The container should be designed to be secured to a solid, stationary base to prevent the bear from tipping it over. The following requirements will help you ensure the container you choose is truly bear-proof:

  • Lids and doors should be (1) tight to reduce odors; (2) recessed; and (3) self-closing.
  • Latches on all lids and doors must be bear proof (i.e. claws unable to reach the latch trigger mechanism)
  • Hinges and latches for lids must be sufficiently strong such that they cannot be pried open by claws (able to withstand several thousands of pounds of force). The rule of thumb is that if it can be dismantled using a crowbar then it is not bear proof.
  • The container must be sufficiently stable or capable of being anchored to prevent tipping by large bears.
  • Container material must be sufficiently strong to prevent bears from chewing, battering or crushing the container.
  • Container should be constructed from corrosion resistant materials to prevent rust and ensure long product life.

A variety of containers are available for home use and multi-unit residential use.

All containers should be tested and certified bear-proof by an independent group, like the Living with Wildlife Foundation.

Trash Can Enclosures:

If garbage can not be stored indoors, trash can enclosures are an effective way to keep wildlife out of your garbage until it can be properly disposed of.

Curbside Solutions

If your community has curbside pickup, we recommend using a system that provides for bear-proof storage and remains secure at the curb.

There are several different brands on the market designed both for manual and semi-automated collection systems. Poly carts are relatively inexpensive, can be easily rolled to different locations and are available in different sizes.

We strongly recommend a cart with a secure user-friendly latching system, that doesn't require the use of cumbersome clips. Unfortunately, in order for carts to be serviced in a fully automated waste system, they must be left unlatched at the curbside. During this time, garbage is vulnerable and access by bears is possible. If your waste collector uses a manual or semi-automated system, ask your collector to unlatch the container at the time of pick-up.

Some carts come in different strengths with models designed for grizzly bears, black bears or varmints. If you don't have grizzlies in your area, the black bear model will save you some money.
